Jean de Dieu IRATUZI, 6 years old
Jean de Dieu is one of five children born to mother Claudine. At the age of three, Jean de Dieu was suddenly unable to walk or talk. His mother estimated it was an issue with his spinal cord. The family first visited Kibagabaga Hospital in March 2016. Shortly thereafter, they were transferred to another advanced hospital in town center. Next, they went to King Faisal Hospital for a CAT scan and other x-rays. The results were inconclusive. The family was left with no clear answer or solution for their young son. In November 2016, the family went to Ndera hospital where they received medicine for him. It became apparent, however, that the medicine also was not helping. Frustrated, and out of answers, the family was advised to go home and wait. Since that time, Jean de Dieu has not received a conclusive diagnosis or successful treatment. LWA was able to provide him with a wheelchair, which his brothers use to help him get around the house and neighborhood.
Jean de Dieu receives support only at home from his brothers, mother, and father. Their extended family and neighborshave chosen gossip and rumors over the truth and love. Sadly, they all believe it is the cause of witchcraft and stay far away fearing they might catch the “curse” themselves. Claudine and her husband have struggled to cope with the harsh words from their family and neighbors. Meeting LWA has helped them both to forgive the neighbors and family for being ignorant. They continue to attempt to educate them on the reality of their son’s condition hoping that one day they’ll understand. Claudine and her husband are so thankful for the love and support of the community at Center for Family Empowerment and look forward to finding a solution for their son very soon.
