HABINSHUTI Ildephonse, 16 years old
Ildephonse is a happy and handsome young boy currently in fourth grade. He was born without tibia bones, which makes his lower legs unfunctional. In the last month, he successfully underwent surgery to amputate his lower legs so that he may be fitted for prosthetics. There are no other limiting conditions for Ildephonse and he is very hopeful for the future. His mother, Beatrice, is no stranger to his condition. One of Beatrice’s oldest sons was born with the same condition and endured the same surgery. While he did not receive prosthetics, this eldest son is married with children and lives a normal life. Ildephonse looks up to his older brother with great hope for his own future.
Ildephonse is currently at Rilima Orthopedic Hospitalwhere he will stay 4-5 months for treatment. He is eager to leave the hospital and return to his studies. His biggest complaint is not the surgery but missing class. He has a wheelchair donated by Love with Actions in the partnership with Handicap International which is key for his recovery. Before receiving the wheelchair, Ildephonse could not attend school. When he was still at home, his siblings would take him to and from school with the wheelchair. His recovery will be long and challenging but with great patience and care Ildephonse will be walking and standing up right for the first time in his life.
