UMUHOZA Justine, 5 years old
Justine is a beautiful little girl. She is the second born in a family of three children of Eugenie and Vedaste. Justine lives with both of her parents in Bumbogo. When Justine was only a few months old, she became very ill. For two weeks, she was in a comatose state staying at a local hospital. Her mother, Eugenie, reports that Justine first presented with her symptoms after waking up from the coma. Frightened for her daughter’s future, she took Justine to several specialists in Kigali. After seeing specialists throughout Kigali, it is estimated that Justine suffers from cerebral palsy. The disease primarily affects her gross motor control and her limbs are rigid. She is, however, very aware of her surroundings. She will smile and laugh when you talk to her but lacks energy to socialize for more than a few minutes. She is also completely dependent on family to feed, wash, and dress her. Eugenie was able to take Justine to therapy for a short time. Eugenie reports that her daughter’s flexibility significantly improved after some physiotherapy sessions at Gatagara Hospital.
Eugenie and her husband, Vedaste, are a great team. When Eugenie feels overwhelmed her husband steps in to take care of all three of their children. They also took turns accompanying Justine to therapy. The major problems for Justine at this time include a disinterest in food and an intense need to sleep the majority of the day. Also, Eugenie and her husband have run out of money to continue taking Justine to therapy. Love With Actions hopes to find a donor to contribute the funds needed so Justine can continue her therapy.
